Proper Experiment

Sherlock wasn’t kissing John. No, of course not. He was experimenting.  He gripped the short man’s shoulders tighter, feeling them tense up with surprise. It had been rather sudden. On a whim, his mind mused that he would very much like to try an experiment. He wanted to know if there was any corllation between lack of affection and John’s sour moods.

He’d been rather angry as of late and no matter what Sherlock did (or didn’t do) he was still upset. He tried everything. He put body parts into his room and well out of John’s line of sight after he nearly threw out an experiment. He refrained from playing his violin for a whole two hours in the middle of the night before he simply had to start up but at least then it was nearly an acceptable time to be awake. At least he thought five am was perfectly sound a time to get up.  When all of that failed he’d gone as far as to get milk on his way home from a case.

John had smiled then and Sherlock felt a sense of relief but as soon he turned his back the frown was back into place. He couldn’t figure out what he’d done and John refused to talk about it. It was frankly getting on his nerves.

Well, there was only one place to turn to then: google. It rarely failed him when he needed to look up something ordinary and wanted it done fast. So he’d looked up various reasons one’s flatmate might be upset.

No, nothing like using someone else’s dishes and they clearly didn’t know about experimentation so that ruled that out. It did, however, offer him a link to a site about relationships. Having no other leads he checked into it.

Lack of affection stood out the most and Sherlock had to admit he was never a man to show real amounts of affection. It seemed pointless or too much effort. He had no time to cultivate a relationshp and certainly not upkeep it. He would of closed out of it if John hadn’t chosen that moment to slam a door and make the detective wince.

Alright, desperate times called for desperate measures. He could at least experiment with it and see if that was indeed what was missing. Maybe John thought living together counted though he never said as much.

John walked into the room and opened his mouth to speak but didn’t get out a word. Like a stealthy panther, Sherlock pounced him right at the door and captured his lips in his own. A hug would have sufficed but that was all hindsight now.

The reaction wasn’t entirely what he’d deduced it would be. He half expected John to push him away or yell.  Instead, John kissed him back as natural as breathing before he yanked back, hand over his mouth. A trained condition then. John had been kissed and his automatic response was to kiss back. Interesting.

”Sherlock!” He sputtered, though it was muffled by the hand over his mouth. “What was that!”

Sherlock frowned, testing words a moment before shrugging. “An experiment.”

”On what?!” John protested finally moving his fingers down yet still managing to look as just as defensive.

”I thought you wanted more… affection in our relationship.” He sounded awkward now that he was saying it out loud. It had been nice at any rate. He hadn’t kissed in a very long time. Not since a case a few years back.

”We don’t have one!” He seemed adamant on the point and Sherlock felt his ears tinge red. Misread again.

Another hesitation, he wasn’t sure on the appropriate social response for kissing his flatmate in the name of science. “Well,” He started looking John over. “You were acting uncomfortably distant and depressed. I thought it might be due to lack of affection.”

John blinked, “You noticed?”

”Of course I noticed. Do you take me for an idiot?” At least snapping felt better then trying to put together an explanation.

”Explains why you’ve been so nice lately about it all. Sarah dumped me, s’all.” He said waving it off and moving to his chair though he watched Sherlock like he might pounce again in the name of a secondary experiment. He flopped down. “Threw me off a touch.”

”A touch?” Sherlock followed him with the persistence only he could muster. “You’ve looked downtrodden for almost two weeks now.”

”And a kiss would fix that?”

”I’d hoped.”

John smiled slightly and leaned back, “Well… it did. Thank you. For caring enough to try, I mean. It did, ah, bring me back.”

Satisfied his experiment had conclusive results Sherlock gave a stiff nod. He sat down in his chair a moment to type up the results before his fingers paused, hovering just over the keys. “John.”

”Yes?”

”An experiment needs more then one run of information.”

John lobbed a pillow that he just narrowly dodged but he was smirking, “Shut up, Sherlock.”
